AMT3 Caroline Schollaert remembered for kindness, service to country in U.S. Coast Guard

From everyone at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Alumni, we would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Caroline Schollaert for their loss.

If you didn’t know, Caroline worked as an aviation maintenance technician at HITRON, but her story didn’t start there. When she was midway through highschool she decided that she wanted to serve in the military. Directly after graduation from Powhatan High School in 2013 she enlisted into the Coast Guard. Right out of basic training in Cape May her first assignment was working on aids to navigation at Station New Haven. The job saw her repairing lighthouses and other maritime aids to navigation in the Long Island Sound. She completed AMT school and was stationed in Jacksonville and assigned to Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron (HITRON), which is a specialized unit of the Coast Guard that handles drug interdictions.

Caroline started a support group for women in the Coast Guard to be their advocate. When there were opportunities to deploy on cutters, usually to the Caribbean or the eastern Pacific Ocean, she would fight against what she saw as restrictions put on females for the opportunity to serve.

Caroline also had a love for baking and taking care of others. Inspired by a grandmother who loved to cook and bake, she regularly brought in baked goods to her unit. She also set up a coffee station at work and made sure everyone had their favorite flavors.

The Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officers Association made a $5,000 donation in Caroline’s honor to the Coast Guard Recruit Training Alumni. The CGRTA directly supports initiatives to increase the Coast Guard Training Center’s overall recruit experience, enhancing returning alumni as well as those that elevate the TRACEN’s reputation.
